A common question for parents choosing a dentist for their child is which type of dentist they should choose. “Do I need a Pediatric dentist or can I use my family or general dentist.” Here we look at some of the differences between pediatric dentists and family dentists to help you decide which one is best for your child.
The Family Dentist
A family dentist provides a general of services such as reducing plaque, preventing or eliminating tooth decay, filling cavities and checking gum and root health. While a family dentist can generally treat people of all ages, some may restrict the age of the patients at which they will treat.
It can be nice and convenient that both you and your child can visit the same dentist, but you will want to ensure your dentist does not have an age restriction and that they are equipped and comfortable with treating young children. For especially young children, however, the family dentist may not be the best option.
The Pediatric Dentist
Pediatric dentists undergo the same dentistry training at a four-year dental school as family dentists and other dental specialists. In addition to this training, they also undergo two to three years additional training specifically aimed at caring for children. This includes teaching and training them how to deal with children’s behavior, treating dental and growth issues and methods for making kids feel comfortable and easing anxiety problems. They also have extra training and certification for treating children with special needs.
The pediatric dentist’s office is especially designed and geared with children’s needs in mind.
- The offices and waiting areas are designed to be fun for kids.
- Pediatric dentists use smaller tools that don’t look intimidating.
- Practice focuses entirely on children, so the pediatric dentist has more experience treating kids.
