What Toothpaste Is Good for Your Child?

What Toothpaste Is Good for Your Child?

Selecting a right toothpaste for your children is an important step to ensure their dental and oral health. On the market there are so many toothpaste brands claiming to be best and kid friendly that it becomes overwhelming to decide which one to buy. These brands market features and flavors to attract parents’ attention but keep in mind that it is the ingredients inside, not the flavor of a toothpaste, that matter in dental health.

As a parent you must be aware of what to avoid while deciding a toothpaste for your little one.

  1. Some children’s toothpastes contain high levels of sugar to make them palatable for young users, such toothpastes are not advisable because sugar contributes to tooth decay.
  2. Do not go for toothpastes with whiteners that help remove stains and plaque. Since baby teeth are softer than adult such toothpastes may be harmful for their dental health.
  3. Some toothpastes have an ingredient called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate that may cause mouth ulcer in children.
  4. Toothpastes with too much fluoride can damage children’s teeth. A recent study by CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and Prevention reveals that 4 in 10 young kids are overusing and ingesting too much fluoride toothpaste, putting them at risk for problems with permanent teeth.

Age Matters While Selecting a Toothpaste

The age of the children needs to be considered when choosing a toothpaste for them. For children between 1-2 years of age, it is important to brush teeth with a fluoride free toothpaste. There are many different flavors available in the category of children’s toothpaste so you may have to experiment to select a flavor that your child likes.

Children within the age bracket of 2-5 years, however, can begin using toothpaste that contain fluoride. While making a selection for your child’s toothpaste make sure the toothpaste packing carries the seal of approval by American Dental Association (ADA).

Although we do not recommend any particular toothpaste for your kid, however, for your convenience here we have complied a list of toothpastes for children that carry ADA seal of acceptance. You may choose any of these based on the flavor your child may like.
